"The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Complete in One Volume," with all of his introductions and notes, various readings, and the editor's notes, published in Edinburgh and London in 1848 by Robert Cadell, Houlston and Stoneman. This handsome edition brings together Scott's poetry and extensive editorial material in a single volume.
Quarto (6.25" x 9.75"), beautifully bound in full brown leather with thick, elaborate gilt-rule framing to the boards. The spine features five gilt-decorated raised bands, gilt lettering in the second compartment, and heavy gilt ornamentation in the remaining compartments. All edges are gilt.
The volume is especially notable for its split fore-edge painting, revealing two separate scenes of golfers with tartan borders when the fore-edge is fanned open. The binding has minor edgewear, with lightly bumped and rubbed corners and tiny losses to the tips. A five-line gift inscription on the first free flyleaf is dated “Xmas 1848,” accompanied by some penciled bookseller notes. There is foxing to the first and last few leaves, while the interior otherwise appears clean.
A beautiful and unusual Victorian-era copy combining Scottish poetry with exceptional golf-themed fore-edge paintings, making it particularly appealing to collectors of Sir Walter Scott, Scottish literature, book arts, and early golf imagery.
