4to.(7" x 10") 1929. Spence, Robert J. New York: Leonard Scott Publication Co. Full navy crushed morocco with multiple gilt frames with decorative corners. Spine with gilt decorated five raised bands, gilt title to one compartment, gilt floral framed floral devices to others, gilt publisher to foot. Gilt ruled board edges with gilt framed leather over blue silk moire doublure and endpapers. Deckled edges, top edge gilt. Limitation page states "This copy of "John Markle, Representative American," is one of an edition of three hundred copies on whitchurch hand-made paper. No. 58" and subject inscribed and signed to Dr. Malcolm James MacLeod (see pic). Stikeman signed doublure binding. Very minor edgewear to head and foot of spine, otherwise Fine.

From the Web: "He had long been known as one of the foremost industrial figures in the State of Pennsylvania. He has been well described as "one of the unique figures of his day and generation, a great executive, a sturdy man of probity and an absolute genius". There were "giants" in those days, and George B. Markle was one of them." George Bushar Markle not only owned a coal mining company, but he invented and patented several tools used in the mines. Markle along with two other men, also founded Hazelton's first bank. Legend has it, he escaped an attempted assassination by the Mollie Maguires. George Bushar Markle was born July 1 1827, in Milton Pa, the son of John and Emily Markle. "George is closely linked with the great Anthracite Coal Region, like Pardee, Hayden, and others who pioneered the way in this line. He came here as a young man, with no other capital than his bare hands, a resolute soil and a clear eye to the coming future of life and its possibilities. In his native village, he had more than the average school facilities at the schools of Steel and Kirpatrick where, as a very young pupil, he received those basic fundamentals which carried him throughout life. After his schooling was completed, he took up surveying and became competent in such an exacting occupation by the time he was 14 years old. George then went to Philadelphia and became an apprentice carpenter, after which he went to Milton, Penna. and entered the saddler's trade with his father-- but this held too meager a future for him and his talents. He was the son of a wealthy man who lost all by the old time endorsing.
