"Source Records of the Great War," edited by Charles F. Horne and Walter F. Austin, 1930. Indianapolis: The American Legion. Complete seven-volume set, 8vo (6.5" x 9.125"), housed in its original wooden shipping crate with an operable lid. Each volume is protected by its own card slipcase.
Each volume features an authorized facsimile binding reproducing the original artistic bindings used on official copies of the Versailles Peace Treaties for the respective countries. Bound in red, brown, blue, or green cloth, the volumes have gilt top edges and engraved frontispieces with descriptive tissue guards. Some pages remain uncut. The bindings are exceptionally well preserved, nearly as new, with only very light spine rubbing and tiny lighter spots to the joints of Volumes II, IV, and VI. The individual slipcases show varying wear, including broken edges.
A particularly appealing set with important provenance: the attestation page records that this copy was registered to Joseph Duffy, presented by his father, Gregory O. Duffy, for his future information and education, in commemoration of American soldiers who served in the Great War. An accompanying certification page and a bound-in engraved certificate bearing an embossed seal from the American Legion further enhance its historical interest.
An impressive, apparently unread collection of World War I source material, preserved in its original wooden shipping crate.
