Léon Vivien De Saint-Martin (1802-1897) was one of the foremost French geographers of the nineteenth century and later became famous for works such as the Nouveau Dictionnaire De Géographie Universelle. This map was prepared as part of a historical and geographical study rather than as a military or administrative map. The title reflects mid-nineteenth-century European scholarship concerning Asia Minor (Anatolia, modern Turkey) and the evolving state of geographical knowledge about the region. The term "Natolie" is an older French form derived from Anatolie, both referring to Anatolia, the Asian portion of present-day Turkey.
