From Wiki: Jacob Rhenferd ( born August 15, 1654 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † October 7 , 1712 ) was a German philologist. Jacob Rhenferd attended school in Moers , learned Hebrew from a relative in Schwerte and then went to Groningen via Hamm . Here he studied with Jacob Alting . In 1678 he became rector of the Latin school in Franeker . Two years later Rhenferd went to Amsterdam to improve his Hebrew with a rabbi. On February 8, 1683 he then received the professorship for oriental languages at the University of Franeker , which he held for 30 years. For a long time he was in scientific dispute with his colleague Vitringa . A philologist is someone who studies the history of languages, especially by looking closely at literature. If you're fascinated with the way English has changed over time, from Beowulf to Beloved, you might want to become a philologist. Linguistics is the study of language, and a philologist is a type of linguist.
