- Rare and important copy of the famous Montanus interlinear Polyglott Bible, reprinted from the final volume of the Biblia Regia (Antwerp Polyglott). These later reissues of the Montanus Bible correct a controversial change in the text in the protoevangelium (Genesis 3:15. The 1573 Antwerp Polyglott changed the Hebrew from “hu” to Hee” (which in English means they changed it from he to she). This was to support the Marian Doctrines of Roman Catholicism. Because they read the Vulgate as reading “she” (which was needed to support the medieval cult of Mary) they deliberately changed the Hebrew from “he” to “she” to support their doctrine. The later reissues of this volume restore the original Hebrew to its true reading. Benedoctis Aroas Montanus, a.k.a. Benito Arias Montano (1527-1598) was a Spanish Orientalist best known for editing this work, the Antwerp Polyglott. Born at Fregenal de la Sierra, he studied at the universities of Seville and Alcala. Montano became a clerical member of the Military Order of St. James and accompanied the Bishop of Segovia to the Council of Trent (1512), winning great distinction. On his return he was summoned by Philip II (1568) to supervise a new Polyglot Bible with the collaboration of many scholars. This work was first issued in 8 volumes in 1572 by the same publisher. Montano was appointed by King Philip II to be the superintendent and was responsible for a large part of the translation and editing, together with major scholars. He then took the Bible to Rome for the approbation of Pope Gregory XIII, Leon de Castro, a professor of Oriental languages at Salamanca denounced Montano to the Pope, and later to the Spanish Inquisition for having altered the Biblical text. It took Montano several journeys to Rome until he was acquitted of the charges in 1580. After that he returned to his hermitage, refusing the Episcopal honors offered him by King Philip II.
