From the Web: Molloy, Joseph Fitzgerald (b1858–1908). His first success was Court life below stairs, or London under the first Georges 1714–1760 (1885), a popular account of the first two Hanoverian reigns, ranging from Handel to Culloden. A second volume, Court life below stairs, or London under the last Georges 1760–1830 (1885), quickly followed and contains a critical account of George IV's slights to Daniel O'Connell (qv) after a visit to Ireland. He wrote biography, history, and miscellany. The romance of the Irish stage (1897) went into several editions. Its account of David Garrick's production of ‘Hamlet’ in 1742 is fascinating, with enchanted Dubliners carried off in faints by what became known as ‘Garrick fever’, produced by the extreme summer heat. Essentially respectable light entertainment for the educated bourgeoisie, nearly all his books are attractively illustrated and bound. Victoria Regina (1908) was published posthumously and is uncertain of its attitude to the monarch, with eyewitness accounts of the famine disrupting the text's reverential tone. He published twenty-three volumes, including the novels Merely players (1881), That villain Romeo (1886), and Excellent knave (1893), before his death in London on 19 March 1908.
