From Wiki:Juan Meléndez Valdés (March 11, 1754 – May 24, 1817) was a Spanish poet, jurist and politician. In 1780 he won the poetry prize of the Royal Spanish Academy with his work Batilo. In 1781 he returned to the University of Salamanca to become Professor of Humanities. In 1783 he received a doctorate in law. During this time he wrote "Las enamoradas anacreónticas" and "Los besos de amor" and married María Andrea de Coca. In 1784 Meléndez participated in one of the three prizes offered by the city of Madrid for the best dramatic composition, obtaining one of them for The Weddings of Camacho the Rich. The famous printer Joaquín Ibarra published the first volume of his poems in 1785 with great success, and several editions were made. In 1789, he began to work as prosecutor for seven months and with the favour of Jovellanos, he obtained the successive posts of judge of the court in Zaragoza in 1789, chancellor in Valladolid in 1791 and prosecutor of the Chamber of Mayors of the House and Court in Madrid in 1797, a position he held for barely seven months; he then wrote his Forensic Discourses, which circulated in manuscript form until they were published during the Liberal Triennium. In addition to those already mentioned, other works by the author are Poems (1785), A Llaguno (1794), On Fanaticism (1795), Spanish Alarm (1808), Ode to Joseph Bonaparte (1810-1811), Prologue to Nîmes (1815) and Forensic Discourses (1821).
