"Confederate Soldier in Egypt" by W. W. Loring, published in New York by Dodd, Mead, & Company in 1884. This historical account reflects Loring’s experiences in Egypt and the Soudan, following his military career after the American Civil War.
Octavo (5.75" x 9"), in full light green publisher's cloth with heavy gilt decoration to the spine and upper cover. The cover features a striking gilt-stamped portrait of a bearded ruler or military official wearing a fez and ornate military uniform with epaulettes, believed to be the author W. W. Loring, also known as Loring Pacha. The book is protected by a transparent dust jacket. The spine shows rubbing at the crown, center, and foot, with rounded corners, darkened edges, and brown endpapers.
The frontispiece depicts Loring Pacha, Féreek and General. Includes a foldout sketch map of the Soudan, which is torn. Library markings appear on page 21, with a tear at the bottom center of page 114 and tears along the sides of pages 231–234.
From Wiki: William Wing Loring (December 4, 1818 – December 30, 1886) was an American soldier, politician, and lawyer. His military career spanned fifty years and saw him serve in the armies of the United States, the Confederate States, and the Khedivate of Egypt.
He was a veteran of the Mexican-American War and was one of the youngest colonels in the U.S. Army at the time before resigning his commission to serve in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Loring, along with other Civil War veterans, travelled to Egypt in an effort to modernize the country's military where he was given the rank of Féreek Pasha (Major General).
