- Owen Jones (1809–1874) was a pioneering British architect, designer, and design theorist best known for his influential work in color theory, ornamentation, and printing, particularly chromolithography. He was instrumental in shaping Victorian design sensibilities and had a lasting impact on modern design through his writings and decorative work. Owen Jones's Victoria Psalter, published between 1861 and 1862, is renowned for its elaborate chromolithographic pages. Each page features a palette of eight distinct colors: gold, black, three shades of red, and three shades of blue. This intricate color scheme was achieved through a meticulous printing process, requiring a separate lithographic stone for each color. Consequently, every page underwent eight separate printings to apply all the colors accurately, demanding precise alignment to ensure proper registration of the hues. The Victoria Psalter stands as a testament to the zenith of Victorian chromolithography, reflecting Jones's dedication to merging traditional manuscript illumination with contemporary printing techniques. Its rich color palette and detailed designs exemplify the fusion of artistry and technological advancement characteristic of the era.
