"The Life of Samuel Johnson, Including a Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides" by James Boswell, published in London by John Murray in 1831. A complete five-volume set in 8vo (5.5" x 9"), handsomely bound in quarter tan polished leather with leather corners and marbled boards. The spines feature five gilt-decorated raised bands, gilt lettering on red and burgundy leather labels, and gilt floral devices. Top edges are gilt with marbled endpapers.

Each volume contains an engraved frontispiece, and Volume II includes a folding map of the Hebrides with a large closed tear to the bottom fold. The set bears the bookplate of Herbert J. Richardson of Newcastle Upon Tyne on the front pastedowns.

Condition includes edgewear and bumped/rubbed corners, with occasional foxing and marginal finger smudging, heaviest to the first and last leaves of Volume III. Despite these imperfections, this is a beautiful and highly shelf-worthy five-volume set of Boswell's celebrated biography and account of his Scottish tour.
