Ernst von Houwald (1778–1845) was a German dramatist and author of novellas. He is best remembered for his fate tragedies (Schicksalstragödien) and moral plays from the early 19th century, which were popular in his time for their emotional depth and often fatalistic themes. His works reflect the transition from late Enlightenment ideals into early Romanticism and Biedermeier sensibilities.
