Full rust pebbled cloth resembling leather with black stamped frames, surrounding gilt "bamboo" rule surrounding a gilt and black stamped vignette of a fisherman holding his catch within a marsh, gilt title above vignette in fancy letter with gilt author below to upper covers, lower with blind stamp frames only, over beveled boards. Spine with five black and gilt faux bands, gilt title to second compartment, gilt vol# to fourth, black stamp or gilt figurative devices to all other compartments, gilt publisher at foot. All edges gilt, dark green endpapers, title page in black and red. Covers with some stains (see pic). Edgewear, corners bumped and rubbed, with small loss. Head and foot of spine chipped, ruffled with small closed tears (see pic), head and foot of vol. I with tiny loss each. Mild, light foxing evident, affecting some plate borders. 41 full page lithographs between the two volumes. Beautifully colored plates.

From Wiki: The Reverend William Houghton (1828–1895) was an English naturalist and clergyman, noted for being the author of British Fresh-Water Fishes. Houghton was rector of Preston on the Weald Moors in Shropshire. A serious naturalist, he became a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London. To produce his major work, Houghton studied fish specimens at the British Museum. British Fresh-Water Fishes (2 vols.) Alexander Francis Lydon (artist), Benjamin Fawcett (printer). William Mackenzie (publisher), London: 1879 : Color plates of British fresh water fish in two volumes. The 41 color plates generally show fish against a natural background or swimming in an underwater setting. The volumes show 38 engraved heading views of regions where the fish occur with diagrams. The text describes the species and their habitats. The volumes are bound in embossed covers with a vignette of an angler holding a fish and freshwater fish motifs in the corners.
