"The History of Greece, From the Earliest State, To the Death of Alexander the Great. To Which is Added, A Summary Account of the Affairs of Greece, From That Period, To The Sacking of Constantinople by The Othomans" by Oliver Goldsmith, published in London in 1821 by Richardson & Co., Sharpe & Son, Baldwyn & Co., et al. A complete two-volume set covering Greek history from antiquity through Alexander the Great and continuing to the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople.

Octavo (5.25" x 8.5"), with 433 pp. in Volume I and 420 pp. in Volume II. Both volumes are bound in full mottled tan calf, with elaborate spines featuring seven wide gilt bands, red and black leather title panels, and large gilt filigree roundels. Marbled endpapers and speckled brown edges complete the bindings.

Condition includes edgewear, bumped and rubbed corners, with most rubbing through to the boards. The heads and feet of both spines are chipped with small losses, though the gilt bands are only minimally affected. The boards are somewhat tender, with evidence of reattachment; notably, the front board of Volume I is fully detached, while the boards of Volume II remain secure.

Volume I bears a previous owner's signature in old ink, while Volume II contains pasted letters. The set also includes several miscellaneous laid-in items, notably a newspaper clipping dated December 18, 1823, featuring a poem about Greece. Despite the binding issues, this remains a visually appealing early-19th-century set with interesting contemporary provenance and ephemera.
