Edgewear, corners bumped and rubbed through to boards, front hinge tender, starting from head. Head of spine chipped with small loss, foot rubbed with loss of color. Both boards soiled and stained. Ohio School Library stamp to front pastedown. Foxing seen throughout, heavier to front and rear of text. Final leaf of ads at rear with long closed tear at spine. Stray old ink markings to prelims. Illustrated with four toned plates, map of Africa, and frontispiece, lacking two plates.
