From the Web: Carl Friederic Egelman (12 May 1782-30 Nov 1860) As a young man C.F. was private secretary to the chamberlain of King George in the Duchy of Linneburg. His mother was a Belgian and came from Flanders. Both of his parents were of titled families. He received a good education, also in music. At 17, he was engaged as secretary to the Chamberlain of England and shortly afterwards was made private secretary. All the time he was in the employ of the Chamberlain, Baron Dinklaga, C.F. lived with the family of the baron at his residence, Schulenburg near Batburgen. During this time his father, sister, and brother-in-law died, his mother having died when he was quite young. When the Baron died, Egelman was sent adrift by the new Chamberlain. He met a cousin who had been in the English navy and who prevailed upon him to go to America. When he landed in Baltimore in October 1802 (Immigration Source says 1803), he found a place as an apprentice in coach-making. His last piece of work was the body of a coach for Jerome Bonaparte.(Note: The Jerome Bonaparte of MD was not born until 1805.) In 1808 he married Maria Schoepke. In 1810 he went to Chester to teach school among the Quakers for several years. He then went to Hain’s Church near Wernersville to teach German and be organist and choirmaster. About 1815 he went to Spies’ Church in Alsace Twp. in the same role, living in the one-story stone house below the church, which was also the school. In this building he made his first almanac calculator. A few years later he moved to Reading and published a German newspaper, “The Berks County Adler,” which he later bought. About 1830 he assisted in publication of a German newspaper, Der Readinger Democrat. At this time he was also organist of Trinity Lutheran Church. Later he sold the paper and printing business and confined himself to making the Almanac Calculations which he continued during his life. He was noted as an astronomer and mathematician. He was recognized as a man of great scientific attainments, having been particularly accomplished in astronomy. For 43 years he furnished astronomical calculations for the principal almanacs published in the United States. The study of perpetual motion received his earnest attention for a number of years, he having devised and constructed various machines for this effort. In the matter of copper-plate engraving he was a skilled artist, and executed a number of superior designs. He was the author of a copybook which he engraved in German and English to teach penmanship. His work as a copperplate engraver was truly wonderful. Among his works are plates of the County of Berks and the City of Reading’s ground plan, and one of a perpetual calendar. Copies of these works are in the possession of the Historical Society of Berks County in the archives."
