"Diagnostics of the Fundus Oculi by Dr. Edward L. Oatman, published in Troy, New York, by The Southworth Company in 1926. This fascinating ophthalmological reference examines diseases of the eye, with 234 in-text illustrations, four colored plates, and two accompanying portfolios containing stereoscopic cards and diagnostic cards.
Quarto (7" x 10"). The text volume comprises xxiv, 303 pages and is bound in blue fabric with gilt spine lettering. The two accompanying plate portfolios are similarly bound. The four colored plates and all 234 in-text illustrations are present. The collection is incomplete, lacking Diagnostic Cards I–VIII and stereoscopic cards 1 and 21. The second portfolio’s spine has been repaired with white book tape; the slipcases show rubbing, staining, and sun-darkened spines. The text volume has edgewear, lightly bumped and rubbed corners, small closed tears at the spine ends, a small stain at the foot of the spine, and light scuffing and soiling to the boards. The upper hinge shows evidence of an older glue repair but remains secure. Some pages have pencil and pen underlining, and a previous owner’s name appears on the title page. AGNM Library bookplates are present in the text volume and on the rear boards of both portfolios.
An intriguing early twentieth-century medical collection for specialists in ophthalmology, the history of eye disease diagnosis, and antique medical illustration.
