An Essay of Health and Long Life by George Cheyne, The Ninth Edition
8vo.(5" x 8") xx + (24) + 232. 1745, London: Printed for George Strahan, et al.: "An Essay of Health and Long Life" by George Cheyne is an important early 18th-century work exploring health, longevity, diet, regimen, and the preservation of life. Cheyne discusses practical approaches to maintaining health, along with the effects of diet and lifestyle on longevity.
This Third Edition, published in London in 1725, is housed in a handsome full brown speckled leather binding with double gilt rule framing the boards. The spine features five gilt-rule bordered raised bands, with gilt lettering on a maroon leather label in the second compartment. All edges are lightly reddened.
The binding shows age-appropriate wear, including edgewear and bumped, rubbed corners with loss to the tips. The head and foot of the spine have an old leather repair and are lightly chipped. The front pastedown bears a bookplate and an old ink signature of Wm. Strong, while a small paper label of Dr. S. Yale appears on the first free endpaper. Some foxing is present, mostly confined to the margins of affected pages.
An attractive example of an early 18th-century medical and longevity text, with a characterful period binding and interesting previous-owner markings.
