Large engraved bookplate of Lillian Stokes Gillespie (1869-1915), an independently wealthy socialite from the Stokes family of New York, a line of enormously successful financiers and merchants, to front pastedown. Second (First Published) Edition; first Issue with page 30 correctly numbered and on the contents page, Chap.VI shows pg 67 not 76 and Chap.XII with an inverted “S” of "ALICE'S" on the last line of the page, Bound in London by Wood (T. Wood & Sons) with a binder’s mark stamped in gilt to the lower inner front board. Original red covers and spine bound in at rear of book. Lacking frontispiece tissue guard. Very minor edgewear, small scuffs to both boards. Prior auction listing tipped on to the verso of the first free endpaper with light pencilled bookseller's notes. Tiny closed tear to fore-edge of half-title page, engraved frontispiece with chipping and marginal loss. Light foxing to first and last several leaves affecting title page and frontispiece. Overall, a very good or better copy of this important literary work. Note: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865 by Macmillan and Co, but after only a few of the planned two thousand copies were fully published, the edition was suppressed when John Tenniel complained about the poor paper quality and their effect on the printings of his illustrations. Most of the copies that were printed went to Carroll to distribute to friends; they were subsequently donated to hospitals. This is the first published copy available to the public.
