- Format
- This beautifully printed annual keepsake or almanacis the first of 6 for young Mexican women, issued by the prolific publisher Mariano Galván. Though printed in Paris, still a tribute to the fine art of Mexican book-making. It catered to young women of the upper-class who stuffed their bodies into the ornamental dresses depicted in the plates. The 10 fine, tissue-guarded, engraved plates include three hand-colored fashion plates, a detailed view of the sanctuary of Guadalupe, allegorical representations of the four seasons and the new year, and a view of the gruta or caverns at Cacahuamilpa in Guerrero. Text chapters describe the caverns at Cacahuamilpa, the sanctuary of Guadalupe, flowers, the art of embroidery, and there is a narrative of travel to Toluca in central Mexico, "Viage al Nevado de Toluca" by José Maria Heredia. Also, poetry and drama ("El Visitador, año de 1567"), and the pages devoted to the almanac itself. All editions of this almanac for señoritas mexicanas are rare. WorldCat locates only four copies of the present first year: the Newberry and Wellesley Colleges in the U.S. and El Colegio de Mexico and Universidad de Monterrey in Mexico.. Illustrated literary gift books for young ladies were all the rage in the United States; this work represents the beginning of the vogue in Santa Anna’s Mexican Republic. Galvan Rivera, the editor, was a prolific publisher and printmaker in Mexico City who later boosted Maximilian’s monarchy and was briefly jailed for treason by Juarez after the fall of the monarchy.
