- Thoughts on the Original Unity of the Human Race by Charles Caldwell, first published in 1830, is a now-obscure but once influential book that explores early 19th-century scientific and philosophical ideas about race and human origins. Caldwell (1772–1853), a physician and professor of medicine, was a controversial figure who combined medical training with speculative anthropology. In Thoughts on the Original Unity of the Human Race, Caldwell argues against the then-emerging theory of polygenism (the belief that different races originated separately) and instead supports monogenism—the idea that all humans share a common origin. However, while he insists on the original unity of the human species, Caldwell simultaneously holds racially hierarchical views that reflect the prejudices of his era.
