Heraldic visitations were surveys carried out by officers of the College of Arms (called heralds) to record and regulate coats of arms and genealogies of noble and landed families in England. These visitations ensured that only those legally entitled to bear arms did so and documented family lineages for official records. This Essex visitation (1664-1668) would have been one of the last official heraldic visitations, as the practice declined after the late 17th century.
