"China, Its History, Arts, and Literature" by Captain F. Brinkley, published circa 1902 in Boston by J. B. Millet. These volumes form Volumes 9–12 of the Oriental Series, with Volumes 1–8 devoted to Japan. The set offers an extensive look at Chinese history, art, literature, and culture.
Quarto (9.75" x 6.37"), bound in quarter tan and brown leather over publisher's cloth, with faded boards and ornate Oriental-themed spines. The spines retain remnants of removed bookseller stickers. The books have gilt top edges and deckled edges, with bumped and rounded corners. Frontispieces appear in all volumes.
The front covers feature a decorative emblem of the Qing Dynasty's Yellow Dragon Flag of China, while the rear boards display an emblem incorporating an intertwined orange letter surrounded by green botanical motifs and yellow berries. Various pages throughout the volumes bear faded blue “Free Library” bookseller/library stamps. A visually distinctive early-20th-century set for collectors of Chinese history, art, literature, and the history of Western Oriental studies.
