August Beyer (1707–1748) was a German scholar and librarian who wrote on rare and unusual books. The title Memoriae Historico-Criticae Librorum Rariorum can be understood as Historical and Critical Memoirs of Rare Books. Rather than simply listing books, Beyer discusses their history, authenticity, rarity, editions, and the controversies surrounding them. Two additional pieces are included: Evangelium Cosmopolitanum ("The Cosmopolitan Gospel"), a satirical or critical text that circulated among eighteenth-century scholars. Notes on Johann Burckhard Mencke's De Charlataneria Eruditorum ("On the Charlatanry of the Learned"), a famous satire attacking scholarly fraud, vanity, plagiarism, and pretentious academics.
