"The British Flora Medica: A History of the Medicinal Plants of Great Britain," New Edition, revised, condensed, and partly rewritten, published in London by Chatto and Windus in 1877. This illustrated botanical reference explores the medicinal plants of Britain, combining botanical description with the historical use of plants in medicine. The volume is illustrated with 48 hand-colored plates, each depicting four plants.
Octavo (5.5" x 9"). xxii, 447 pages. Bound in full burgundy cloth with black stamped rules framing the boards. The spine is sun-faded, with faded gilt lettering. The binding shows edgewear, bumped and rubbed corners, ruffled spine ends with small closed tears, and lightly soiled boards. A sticker with a penciled plate notation appears on the front pastedown, and the last free endpaper bears a previous owner's pencil notes.
All 48 hand-colored plates are present; however, 12 plates—numbers 1, 9, 13, 16, 20, 21, 31, 33, 38, 40, 41, and 42—have become disbound and are laid in. Some plates show small marginal tears and pencil annotations.
An appealing Victorian botanical work for collectors of medicinal herbals, hand-colored botanical illustrations, herbal medicine, and the history of British plant lore.
