Known formally as A Universal History, from the Earliest Accounts to the Present Time, this ambitious work aimed to chronicle world history from antiquity through to the era contemporaneous with the publishers—thus “up to the present.” It was translated and compiled by a “Society of Learned Men” from English into other languages, facilitating its wide reach. At the time of its publication, this series was one of the most comprehensive historical syntheses available, offering European readers a sweeping narrative that unified regional histories into a global framework.
